Welcome back everyone!  Let's make this round of Biggest Loser the best one yet!  I know I am coming in with determination and full of motivation for all of us!

I wanted to invite everyone to join me in the 2013 Cleveland Heart Walk (3 miles) on Saturday, September 28th at 9:00am.  The walk kicks off at 10:00am from Voinovich Park in Downtown Cleveland!

I set up a team and would love for you to head on over there and join me!

CLICK HERE TO JOIN MY TEAM!!!

It is a 3 mile WALK and I am confident EVERYONE can do that in our group.  We will go as fast as the slowest person in the group, and stick together as TEAM BLESS YOUR HEART! This is not a race, and a great opportunity to get out and walk to help save lives!

Please note that while I have a personal fundraising goal and a team fundraising goal, this is NOT required to join the team, or to walk with me.  If you choose to fundraise, that is completely up to you.  I am just looking for some good company!

We all know how much walking helped me in the numerous rounds of Biggest Loser that we have had - and I am a HUGE encourager of walking as it is FREE and all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.  Won't you join me in helping not only others, but our own hearts!

Join me in my efforts to support the Heart Walk!

Imagine the impact if we reduce death and disability from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20% by 2020! I’m joining the American Heart Association's Heart Walk to promote physical activity to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Please support me in helping to reach this lifesaving goal by giving a donation today! Thanks in advance for your support.

This is short and sweet this week because I am tired, I MIGHT be fighting a cold (along with a bad case of denial about said cold) and my brain is not cooperating with putting two thoughts together to make a coherent post, let alone a coherent paragraph.

That said, I found this article and thought it was BRILLIANT!  You know how I am always preaching that you don't need to go out and spend a bunch of money to get into shape/change your lifestyle - this helps support my sermon.

Make a home gym with items from your local Dollar Store

Did I mention I LOVE this!  Now there's really NO excuse not to get that workout in.

And I am willing to bet that we all have atleast HALF of these items in our homes already!

What are you waiting for?!

Have a great week everyone!

You Better Check Yourself...

Posted by Melissa A Hazek on February 21, 2013 at 11:40 AM Comments comments (2)

We are at the official half way point!  6 weeks down, 6 to go!   How are you doing so far?  Have you been sticking to your goals?  Keeping with your plan?  Why not take time at this halfway point to check in with yourself, and re-focus on what you originally set out to do.

There is a saying in yoga, "come back to your breath."  This is often said when your mind starts to wander, or you start to feel alittle chaotic in a tough pose.  "Come back to your breath."  Recenter yourself - refocus - calm the mind, breath and move forward.  I think this is so relevant in so many ways and can be applied to life in general - but today, let's use it as a reminder to ourselves that we may get sidetracked on our journey to good health - but we can always right our way.

Here are some tips to help (re)motivate you on this journey.

I also wanted to share this article on strength training using your own body weight for resistance.  This only further proves my theory that all you need is a pair of gym shoes and your own body to get started!

(FYI - this article is full of resourceful links to workouts/tips/etc - so be sure to check it out - it might be just what you need to get (re)motivated!)

A little Valentine's Love for Yourself!

Posted by Melissa A Hazek on February 14, 2013 at 1:20 PM Comments comments (1)

Whether your married, in a relationship or single - we must {learn to} love ourselves before anything else!

Trust me, I know how it is to look in the mirror and not see what I want to see (a stronger, leaner, healthier version of myself)!  However, I remind myself daily that I am working toward getting stronger (by incorporating weight sessions into my training), leaner (overall eating and exercise plans) and healthier (improved breathing, strong legs that carry me on my runs, and overall feeling better).

Perhaps we can all use alittle reminder to love ourselves on this Valentines Day!

5 Ways to Love Your Body

Instead of heading out to gorge yourself this V-day - why not grab your partner and get ina good sweat session (using the ideas below, or perhaps you can sweat it out another way *wink*wink*).  Or maybe you can use the moves below to work off that V-day gorging session (we all love a good meal and some chocolate, I'm guessing!).

 V-Day Workout for Couples

And lastly - because we all love chocolate and sweets, I leave you with some "healthified recipes" to indulge in!  I am eyeballing the Chocolate Mousse!

Chocolate Goodness!

Have a wonderfuly, love filled, healthy Valentine's Day everyone!  And a GREAT Week!

It's one month out of twelve

Posted by Melissa A Hazek on January 24, 2013 at 11:30 AM Comments comments (3)

We are approaching our 3rd weigh in of Biggest Loser, and also the first day of February. Can you even believe it?!

I started to get really down on my self this past week cause I was slacking on my workouts (aside from zumba!, I took my week 4 running recovery/rest week alittle too literal and RESTED all week... ugh!).  My eating has been OK, but I have not been tracking as I promised myself I would do.  The time is flying and we all know the next 10 weeks will be over before we know it... I REALLY want some thing to show for it.

It's one month out of twelve.

I read this somewhere online this morning... and boy did I need this reminder!

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, I am making lifestyle changes... not just "dieting" for the sake of losing some pounds over the course of a couple weeks.  So what if I slacked off in January?!  It is one month out of twelve.  I still have 11 more months left in the year to make healthy decisions, and move my body.

We all need a good reason to "check in" with ourselves throughout our journey to health - why not use the first of the month to do that.

Friday Link Love

Happy Friday and Happy First Weigh in peeps!  From what I have seen already - it looks like most of us were happy campers this morning after steppiing on those scales!

GREAT JOB - let's keep it up!!!

I wanted to share some of the things I've been reading this week to help keep me informed and motivated:

The Mayo Clinic recommends stretching throughout the day while at work. (Check yourself right now, if your hunched over your desk on your computer like I am than you can benefit from a couple of these atleast!)

Is your home/office environment helping or hindering your weight loss?  Check out these tips to help you on your health journey.

Here are a couple of free workout ideas to incorporate into your routines:

7 Planks ideas

Scroll down the post for a photo diagram.  Note:  I -capital- H-A-T-E planks (even more so than lunges! Yeah, that much!) But I found this and have been trying to add one of these a couple times per week.  It sucks, but I do believe they help tremendously with my super-weak core!

6 Moves to Kick your way into shape!

Who doesn't love a good kick ass workout that builds up a good sweat?  If you scroll down - they even provide recommended songs to perform the routine to.

Restorative Yoga Sequence

After your done planking and kicking some ass, this is the perfect way to unwind and cool down.

Isn't this what we've been doing all along?!

Funny - the site does basically what we do here - only difference is they money is added up front.  I like the idea - but feel that paying weekly keeps everyone involved and comitted.

Come across anything lately on the old internets, or in a magazine/book/paper that you think is helpful?  Share it below!

Who knew Exercise could be so FUN?!?!

Last Wednesday night a couple of our Big Losers met up at St. John Nepomucene for a Zumba class and boy did we shake it, work it and dance it out!  Talk about an hour of fun moves that almost make you forget you are exercising.

The class had a GREAT turnout for the first week - with participants ranging in age from young to "older" (;-) and all body types!  The instructor was helpful in explaining the moves, and advising that even if you don't get it on the first try - just keep moving!  I felt alittle silly at the beginning, but by the end, I almost forgot that I was exercising!

I loved it and am planning on going back this Wednesday and Guess what?!  I want YOU to join us!

Zumba Class

7:00pm - 8:00pm Wednesday, Jan. 16th

St. John Nepomucene Gym

4906 Fleet Avenue, Cleveland, OH  44105

Cost is $5.00 per class (and your 5th class is free)

Hope to see you there!

The start of something good

Posted by Melissa A Hazek on September 1, 2012 at 11:05 AM Comments comments (0)

Today is September 1st. And while we may find ourselves asking where in the hell did the time go, and how are we in September already - I can't help but think of it as a fresh start.

A fresh start to evaluate where we are in our journeys toward the lifestyle changes we are making, and how we are doing emotionally and mentally. A fresh start to put the past behind us, and maybe we make some new goals (or revise current goals) for the next four weeks.

I have not been keeping up with my running as much as I would have liked over the past month - and while I can blame the heat, my body and pretty much anything else (my shoe laces are not equal length from one another... Whelp, better shelve that run for today... Am I right?!) I have to realize that the past is the past. I cannot change anything over the past couple weeks/months, but I can make a plan for the next four weeks. I can make a plan that will help me accomplish my first goal of logging 50 miles this month.

I have also started practicing yoga weekly (if you are interested, please check out Nishkama Yoga in Independence and North Olmsted) to help really center myself, and work out those muscles that I use daily. I am a total beginner at yoga, so my second goal is to really be present on my mat, and really work hard to remember the correct positions and breathing for me. The benefits far outweigh the struggles that come with being a beginner to really push, and concentrate on what I am doing in class. I can feel it in my overall body (posture, core and balance are all a BIG work in progress for me!), mentally and emotionally. I plan to take that practice to the mat 1 - 2 times per week for the next four weeks.

I have two specific goals in mind, but I wanted to share some others that I have found that can be practiced each day of this fresh new start to September.

Maybe this will help you find your goal for the month, ar atleast inspire you to start doing something each day that will help you not just physically, but also help your overall well being on this crazy journey we are all on!

What are your goals for September?

(Mini-contest time! First person to comment with their set goals for September wins a prize from the "Auntie Fatties Prize Closet!" You have until Thursday, September 6th at NOON EST. So spill it!)

Don't let one day delay you!
