It Works! And Now There's A Study to Back it Up!

I came across this article this morning, and thought it was more than relevant with the start of The Biggest Loser 3.0 next friday!

The More Frequently You Log On, the More Weight You Can Keep Off, Study Finds

A few excerpts of the article I thought to be very interesting are below:

"Consistent website users who logged on and recorded their weight at least once a month for two-and-a-half years maintained the most weight loss, the study found."

"This study shows that if people use quality weight management websites consistently, and if they stick with their program, they are more likely to keep their weight off," said study co-author Victor J. Stevens, PhD, co-author and senior investigator at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research. "Keeping weight off is even more difficult than losing it in the first place, so the fact that so many people (in the study) were able to maintain a good portion of their weight loss is very encouraging to us."

"participants who ended up in the internet group had lost an average of 19 pounds. Once they were given website access, their objective was to keep off as much of that weight as possible. Consistent users who logged in and recorded their weight at least once a month for 24 months maintained the greatest weight loss."

"While the study website is no longer available, there are many useful weight management websites that people can access. The study authors advise consumers to look for these important elements:

  • Sites that encourage accountability by asking users to consistently record weight, exercise, and calories consumed
  • Sites that include tailored or personalized information
  • Sites with interactive features that allow users to communicate with each other and with nutrition and exercise experts
  • Sites with accurate health information."
So, as you see - this is kinda/sorta what we are trying to do with our little community here!  And while we don't have any health experts on hand for questions, and guidance - you can check out the following sites that might help you log your weight, exercise and calories:

*The Daily Plate is part of the Live Strong website

Lose It  - this is for the iphone and what I currently use.

(this is a pay/monthly subscription site, but I had to include just because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her!!!)

There really are just too many to list, AND let's not forget that sometimes a simple pencil and paper can help keep you on track!

I find for myself that tracking my calories, weight and activity really helps to keep me accountable, but also gives me a great sense of accomplishment when I stick to my calories, reach that weight or just get off my butt and get moving!  I use a combo of the sites above - and sometimes just check out the others to see what information is being featured.

What is your game plan for tackling The Biggest Loser 3.0 this time around?

What Have You Been Eating?!

Posted by Melissa A Hazek on April 29, 2010 at 10:20 AM Comments comments (2)

As I was checking my emails this morning, I came across a new website that is all about recipes... healthy recipes!  I know, I know... there are a TON of these websites on the internet available to us all.  But the thing I liked about this site, is that it makes over some of our tried and true favorites - cut the fat, keep the taste!

http://www.eatbetteramerica.com/

I think I might just have to try a few of these out...

Cheesey Potatoes

*I healthified my green bean casserole just by using low sodium beans, low sodium/low fat mushroom soup, and chicken stuffing instead of the fried onions.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

* I have been looking for a low fat recipe of this dip - it is one of my FAVORITES!!!

Layered Salad

*another fave that when made with the normal recipe ate up alot of my calorie intake for the day (pun intended).

These are just a few of the "healthified recipes" they have on the site.

What have you been doing to "healthify" your eats?  Any suggestions or ideas to share?  Please do so in the comments..........

And Good Luck this week Losers ;-)!!!

I have added this link to the LINKS section of the website in case anyone wants to check it out!

Go Red BetterU Program

Hey All!

I try to post stuff that I think can help all of us throughout our twelve week challenge, as well as beyond into our lifestyle.  Recently I have been keeping up with The American Heart Association in addition to my regular healthy lifestyle links I read daily/weekly.

I came across the BetterU link in a newsletter I receive, and when I saw it was from the American Heart Association/Go Red for women, I had to check it out.

Coincidentally - it is a 12 week program - FREE - that will help coach you and guide you to a more heart healthy/overall healthy life.  Since I am already trying to Get Walking through the AHA, I might as well try this out.

Check it out here:

Good Luck, and if you come across anything you want posted, please feel free to write a blog entry (click on +add post/entry above) or email me and I will add to the links page.

Not losing... Don't Worry!

Just a little reminder, and uplifter...  Don't worry too much if you are not losing too much weight week by week.  Depending on what your doing - you may also be building muscle mass - which weighs more than fat.  So don't be discouraged - just keep at it!

Sometimes, slow and steady wins the race (I know, I know... I keep saying that!)!

Keep it up!  We're all doing great!!

Rules for Contest

Congratulations!

... On joining The Rodes Family BIGGEST LOSER Competition!

Rulesare listed below... and in the meantime - take alittle time to explore the site and I will email you with further directions as to what all we can do with the site.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SO here are the basics:

3 months beginning Thursday Jan. 14th through April 1st (4/1 being the last weigh in!).

Every Thursday/Firday please email Tracy and I (see the contact us section of the website for our information!) with how much you lost/gained (If you want to include your starting weight - you can - but I don't thinkit is necessary)  It is basically the honor system... which is family -so I would think this would not be a problem.

Tracy and I will keep track of who owes what each week. Whoever loses the LEAST amount that week owes $20.00 into the pot.  Wewill keep track and periodically email you when you owe money.

PLEASEDO NOT join the competition if paying you cannot commit to paying yourtotal at the end of the competition - this is not fair to the personthat wins! Tracy and I will collect the money at the end of the competition.

At the end of the 3 months, after all weigh-in's have been accounted for - the person who loses the most weight wins the pot!

Feel free to use whatever methods (diet and exercise) you think will work for you, no restrictions (*except surgery!).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thisweek, all you need to do is get on the scale and get your initial weight.

So long as you take your weight by Saturday/Sunday - you shouldbe ok for the first weigh in next Thursday.(I am happy to keep track of weights, along with losses if you feel comfortable sending me that information - just let me know!)

NEXTTHURSDAY, January 21st will be the first official weigh-in - in whichyou will email us with how much you have gained, lost or maintained.

I look forward to hearing from you if you wish to participate!

Many thanks, and Here's to getting healthy in 2010!!!

Tracy and Melissa

(therules of this contest have already been ironed out, and are in place asof today.  If you have any input/suggestions/opinions on how we arerunning the competition, please keep them to yourself and choose not toparticipate.  Otherwise - why not join in the fun!)

Oh,and if you commit to the competition now, you are committing to thefull 3 months.  Again, if you feel you will not be able to do this, beit physically or financially - please do not participate!

I will hunt you down for weigh in info every week once you commit ;-)!

I'm sorry... this made me giggle

I know - I don't want to be rude, but this made me chuckle a bit when I saw it online.... talk about motivation to lose more weight:
